One hot summer day in Jamaica, Tandi went to the market with her grandmother Venetta. "Tandi, we are going to cook a big dinner for your grandfather's birthday today," said grandmother. Tandi went around the market picking up things her grandmother needed. Tandi picked up foods like ackee, saltfish, oxtail, chicken, rice , beans, jerk seasoning, goat, curry sesoning, and green bananas.
When Tandi and grandmother arrived home , they cleaned the house and started to prepare the food. "Do you think we will finish the food in time before grandfather gets home?" asked Tandi. "I think that we will finish just in time," grandmother said with a smile. "Good!" Tandi exclaimed. After Tandi finished helping grandmother put all the food together, she went outside to play with her friends, Kai, Walton, and Luca. "Tandi, pass the ball!" Walton shouted. tandi ran to the ball and kicked it. The ball went over a fence and into a ladies yard. None of her friends wanted to get the ball so Tandi decided to do it herself.
Tandi climbed the ladies fence to get the ball. She was almost on the other side when she slipped and fell. "Ouch!" Tandi screamed. she saw a big cut on her knee. The lady heard Tandi scream and came outside to see what happened. A lady came outside to help her and bandaged her up.
The lady was very nice to Tandi and offered to walk her home. Tandi and the lady talked about what they like and what they don't like. when Tandi got home she introduced her grandmother to the lady that helped her. Tandi told her grandmother all about what happened. Her grandmother thanked the lady and invited her to join them for the big dinner they cooked for grandfather.
The lady agreed and when grandfather came home he was so happy to see his surprise birthday dinner that his family cooked. As they gathered around the table they talked and ate and laughed and smiled. Tandi thought to herself, there is nothing better than a happy Jamaican family.
The next day, Tandi noticed a note sitting on the dinner table. She looked at the front and it said, To: Tandi. Tandi opened the note and it read, "Thank you Tandi for having me over for dinner and for our wonderful conversation. I don't get many visitors and I had a great time. You are welcome to come over anytime you like."-Kala
Tandi smiled and put the note on her nightstand. Later that day Tandi decided to take grandmother and grandfather to Kala's for a visit. They played games and talked all day. Tandi remembered all the awful things she heard her friends say about Kala. She was happy to know the truth about Kala. Tand was happy that her family made a new friend. Tandi promised herself that from that day forward she would never listen to another rumor about someone she didn't know.
